French for New Residents

The French for New Residents program at the Canada Language Centre is required if you are moving to a French-speaking region of Canada or Quebec. The program features an accelerated curriculum tailored to newcomers to Canada and Quebec, with sessions covering language and cultural issues relevant to everyday life and employment.
French for New Residents classes equip you with the skills and abilities needed to succeed in a French-speaking environment in Quebec, or in any French-speaking part of Canada.

Course Strategy
Communicative Approach
The communicative approach, also known as the natural approach, emphasizes the ability to communicate naturally by factoring in the communication situation. Students are not taught isolated words or grammatical structures, but learn through communication tasks in specific contexts.
Authentic Source Material
Much of the printed and audio material used in the course are real-world sourced, using authentic speech patterns and accents, and adapted to meet the course objectives.
Language Exam Preparation
The French for New Residents lessons will also assist you in preparing for the exam that you will take to validate your French language skills. Exercises based on TEFAQ, TEF, TCF, and DELF test questions will help you prepare for exam day.
Learning Grammar
We favor an approach whereby students discover grammar rules by induction. This requires students to be active in their learning. The teacher leads and helps students to discover the grammatical rules by themselves, and then, the rules are confirmed in a more explicit form by the teacher.
Homework
We assign homework between lessons, consisting of grammar drills, reading, writing or listening exercises. Assignments reinforce the concepts learned in class and provide continuity.
Importance of Oral Communication
Oral communication is an important skill that we value at the Canada Language Centre. Although all four skills are covered in our program, activities related to oral comprehension and oral production always take precedence.
